Baby Watch – Week 5!

baby-development-5-weeks-pregnantSo some of you may be wondering two things right about now. First, why is there a “Baby Watch” on Greatlandings? And second, what happened to weeks 1-4? To answer the first question, Erin is pregnant with our first baby! As you may or may not know, we have been trying for a very long time. Trips to the doctors, tests, and even a surgery Erin was scheduled to have next week. Then a little over a week ago we were driving down to the lake when Erin said she “knew” she was pregnant. Having seen her make this declaration before I was a little skeptical but hopeful. When we got to the dock Erin ran directly to the boat to use the bathroom. Partly because it was a 4+ hour drive thanks to some heavy traffic, and partly because she wanted to take a pregnancy test. That test turned out to be positive and that is why we now have a section on Greatlandings called “Baby Watch“.

After learning of the good news we motored over to the floating house where Adam, Sarah, Simmie, Julie, and the kids were waiting for us. Since there was no way to hide what just happened due to both Erin and my excitement, we quickly shared the good news with everyone. After that weekend we wanted to tell everyone as fast as possible but also wanted to do some of them in person. So that Sunday Erin and I drove out to Tom and Kathy’s house to tell them, and this last weekend we drove all the way to Minnesota to tell my parents. And that is why we are now at Week 5 on the update.

What is this then? Actually I have no idea. But you know me, I will find some way to make sure everything gets put on the internet. So I figure I will just put up some general info on what is going on or coming up, as well as some crazy facts that I have learned on all the new baby websites I have been visiting. Two things I will tell you right now that will not be discussed however. First, the sex. We have decided (and hope to be able to stick with) not to find out if the baby is a boy or a girl. As Erin explained it there is very few things in life that are a true surprise and both of us want to be surprised on that day. Second, no names. It is not that we don’t appreciate opinions and suggestions on names, in fact we welcome them! But when it comes to picking out ones we like we are going to try and keep them to ourselves. That why no one has to be in a position to tell us one of the names we picked sucked, and we will not be in the position of having to hate on you for making fun of our favorite names. Plus then in addition to being surprised to hear if it is a boy or a girl, you all get to also be surprised to hear the name. So really we are doing this for you!

IMG_1285Now that I have explained what the Baby Watch is, what can I tell you? This week Erin has been feeling really tired. Lucky for everyone around here that has been about it. No real sickness, and only the normal amount of mood shifts. But since I know she will be reading this I will say she has been a complete and utter delight to be around. Yesterday we went to Kroger to get snacks and stuff she likes, and today we went on a walk around the neighborhood with the dogs. A walk I might add that Erin and I did fine on, but almost killed Buddy and JD, otherwise known as “Old and Fat“.

1075595_pen_tip_macroSome fun facts for you before I close things down. According to the baby website week five is the first week the baby actually starts to take some sort of shape other then a ball of cells. They say that this week the heart and circulatory system begin to take shape, and that by the end of week five the heart will begin to beat. This is also the week that the umbilical cord will develop. Currently the baby is approximately the size of the tip of an ink pen or 1/17 of an inch, but growing very rapidly.

That is about it. Erin and I are both very excited and happy about the news. Be sure to tune in next week for another update. I don’t want to give anything away, but from what I am reading things are going to start happening very fast!
