Welcome to Baby Watch for week #9! This week we have a real nail biter so get comfortable people! Erin and I had our first doctors visit this week on Monday. While there they promptly made appointments for our second and third visits being the helpful little buggers that they are. One of which was just two days following the first one, and in my opinion that is how you get this baby stuff done y’all! I really think with the right motivation and enthusiastic medical staff like we have going here it is entirely possible to have this baby out and rocking and rolling in four, maybe five months tops! They are that good and I think I will run my plan by them next time we are in. But just in case that doesn’t work out, the due date they gave us is May 10th, 2010. We go back on Wednesday this week for an ultrasound. This is because Erin was taking that medicine to help her get pregnant and apparently it increases your odds of having twins by 10%. So while they don’t normally do an ultrasound till about 20 weeks, if there is more then one hiding in there they want to know sooner then later.
Anyway, the first appointment was on Monday where we met with Tina the nurse lady. Erin’s doctors office has a policy that says we have to have at least one appointment with everyone there at some point so that we can be familiar with them all. And this week it was Nurse Tina’s turn. But before we got to see her, Erin had to take another pregnancy test to make sure this isn’t some sort of trick ( no trick, it was positive). Then we had to answer 233,544 questions with one of the other nurses. She asked some normal stuff. What our phone numbers are, who they should call if they can’t get a hold of me (Congrats to Kathy!), and if there were any allergy stuff they should know about. Then things got a little strange and she begin asking lots of questions about diseases that I could not even say, let alone have. Luckily Erin seemed to be on top of it and I just hung back and nodded like I knew what was happening.
Next for Erin it was the paper gown, and for me it was some alone time in the corner. They did some checks and tests and when it was all said and done they said everything was looking great! They gave us a whole bunch of information to take home and read. That night after Erin went to bed I spent most of the night reading it and what I have learned so far is that Iron is important in your diet and all the symptoms Erin has had are “completely normal and should improve over time“, according to the pamphlet anyway. It is probably good to point out that all this info pertained only to Erin or the baby and there was nothing for me. But I guess when you think about it a pamphlet that says “Shut up, your wrong, deal with it” would really be a waste of paper because that stuff can just be passed along verbally… everyday…
While we wait for Wednesday we can check out what the baby site has too say. Looks like for this week they are sticking with using food as a measuring device and say the baby is about one inch long, or the length of an olive. The skeleton is starting to harden and hair follicles are forming along with the intestinal system and the internal parts of the reproductive system. They also say muscles are begining to develop and in a few more weeks Erin may start to feel it move! Good times!
So what you have been reading above was written up on Monday after our first appointment. This part is now being written on Wednesday following our ultrasound appointment and you will have to excuse me because less then 30 min ago I seen my baby for the first time and I am still a little emotional from the whole thing. As you can see by the pictures there is only one in there and just like the baby site said it was just a tad over one inch long (no mention of olives at the appointment though). But even for being that small we were able to clearly see everything. The head, the body, hands, feed, and even the heart beating away at 168bpm. Now I have seen ultrasound pictures before, and I even Goggled “9 week ultrasound” to make sure I knew what to expect before we went. But when MY little baby came on the screen with a heartbeat as plain as day, moving around wiggling and waving like the tiniest most fragile creature in the whole world, it took everything I had not to breakdown right there and just curl up on a ball on the floor. I seen my baby for the first time today and it was absolutely amazing!
