Fire Pit Safety

Posted by on November 2, 2009

smokey-the-bear-classicWe got a couple phone calls from folks who recognized our street name on the news last night, so I thought I would explain what happened. I mentioned in my Halloween 2009 post that we had a fire pit set up in the driveway while we handed out candy. Well we were not the only ones in the neighborhood to do so. In fact on just a normal Friday or Saturday night you will probably find at least a handful of people around here with the fire pits going, hanging out. Apparently the people who live at the top of our street were cleaning up after Halloween on Sunday afternoon and they moved the fire pit from the driveway to along side the house where they store it when they are not using it. Obviously they were under the impression that everything was out, and it was safe to do so. Sadly they were wrong. Shortly after the family left to head into Florence the house caught fire. Neighbors called the fire department who mostly spent their time trying to keep the fire from spreading to the neighboring houses since by the time they arrived there was no hope of saving the original house. The fire was so hot it literally melted the siding off the houses on either side. As you can see by the pictures the original house is a total loss and the family has been up there sifting through the shell of a house picking out whatever they can save. Very sad to see something like this happen. The only good news to report is that no one was hurt.
