Baby Watch – Week #14

baby-development-14-weeks-pregnant2Hi everyone, welcome back to baby watch! We are at week 14 now and things are going very well. Erin is doing great and is starting to look more and more pregnant everyday. This week she had to do some shopping for maternity clothes including what has to be the biggest bra I have ever seen. Whoops, was I not supposed to say that… Anyway, that and her new funny looking maternity jeans look great on her. So good in fact I am thinking about picking up a pair for myself. Otherwise not much new to report. She is tired and that is about it.

The baby room has a little bit of news this week. And by little, I mean very little. We taped the room in preparation for paint, and that is all. Moving on….

I have a new plan for the baby site information from here on out. I am going to cut and paste exactly what they have to say. That way we can all read together what is going on, and if I have any comments I will add them after. So here is what they have for week #14~

Baby’s Growth and Development at 14 Weeks Pregnant

While many areas of your baby’s body are becoming further refined during the 14th week of pregnancy, much of the development this week focuses on your baby’s small reproductive system:

  • When you’re 14 weeks pregnant, your baby is about the length of your clenched fist.
  • In boys, the prostate gland is forming. In girls, ovaries are moving into her pelvis from her abdominal area.
  • Your baby’s thyroid gland now is working and making hormones.
  • By your 14th week of pregnancy, your baby’s palate, or the roof of his mouth, has completely formed.
  • Your baby already might be or soon will begin growing body hair, called lanugo, which will temporarily keep your baby warm until his baby fat accumulates.
  • His head will grow to four times its current size and increase 60 times in volume by the time of his birth.

So there we have it, week #14 is in the bag! Still not 100% on what “lanugo” exactly is, but based on Erin and I that kid probably has a whole heck of a lot of “lanugo” going on. Can’t wait to see what week #15 brings us!

Baby Watch – Week #13

baby-development-13-weeks-pregnantHello everyone, welcome back to Baby Watch for week #13! Erin and the baby are feeling great! In fact I think she is feeling better then ever so that is a huge positive! She is still a little tired here and there, but it is hard to say if that is due to being pregnant or because sleeping is her favorite hobby. On Monday we celebrated Erin’s birthday by going to our second baby doctor appointment. I think we both expected a little more to happen, but all they really did was talk to us and give us some papers to fill out. The highlight was being able to listen to the heartbeat again. Still totally amazing to be able to hear a baby inside there. Our next appointment isn’t for another four weeks, and by that time I am hoping they hook us up with another ultrasound.

On the baby site there is all sorts of good stuff. They say the organs, muscles, and nerves are formed and starting to work together. They say the eyes and ears are clearly defined but that the baby’s eyelids are fused together to protect the still-developing eyes. Vocal cords are are developing and tissue that will eventually harden into bone is starting to show up in the head, arms, and legs. They also say that tiny ribs might even be visible! Sweet! See ya next week!

Fire Pit Safety

smokey-the-bear-classicWe got a couple phone calls from folks who recognized our street name on the news last night, so I thought I would explain what happened. I mentioned in my Halloween 2009 post that we had a fire pit set up in the driveway while we handed out candy. Well we were not the only ones in the neighborhood to do so. In fact on just a normal Friday or Saturday night you will probably find at least a handful of people around here with the fire pits going, hanging out. Apparently the people who live at the top of our street were cleaning up after Halloween on Sunday afternoon and they moved the fire pit from the driveway to along side the house where they store it when they are not using it. Obviously they were under the impression that everything was out, and it was safe to do so. Sadly they were wrong. Shortly after the family left to head into Florence the house caught fire. Neighbors called the fire department who mostly spent their time trying to keep the fire from spreading to the neighboring houses since by the time they arrived there was no hope of saving the original house. The fire was so hot it literally melted the siding off the houses on either side. As you can see by the pictures the original house is a total loss and the family has been up there sifting through the shell of a house picking out whatever they can save. Very sad to see something like this happen. The only good news to report is that no one was hurt.

Halloween 2009

In case you were wondering why a bunch of kids kept coming to your door demanding treats it was because this past weekend was Halloween! Erin and I were lucky enough to be able to spend the night with Kathy, Tom, Adam, Sarah, Skylar, and Cole at our house. Skylar dressed up as a dead bridesmaid, and Cole went as Jason from the Friday the 13th movies. Adam A had on a crazy biker outfit, and I went as a pilot (I had all the stuff already). There was also an appearance from Super Dog and Bat Dog! We set up the bonfire in the driveway and handed out candy and after trick or treating was over we headed in the house for a little Rockband. It was a great night but I have to admit I didn’t feel all that well today. I’m not sure if it was the wine (served Kentucky style over ice in a plastic cup) or all the Halloween candy I ate, but either way today was a slow recovery day. Good times, and thanks to everyone for coming over!

Be sure to check out all the pictures on the Greatlandings Photo Site in the Halloween 2009 album!
