Baby Watch – Week #18

baby-development-18-weeks-pregnantWelcome to week #18 of Baby Watch. Not a whole lot to report this week. Everyone is doing good and we are all looking forward to next weeks ultrasound. Erin has been playing the baby music at night for some reason. I just like watching her try and stretch the headphones over her belly so I don’t ask, I just watch. She also still swears she can feel it move more and more. Which is probably true and is pretty exciting. But since I don’t get to feel anything it is also a little disappointing for me. I tried to shove the cat under my shirt to get a sense of things, but I highly doubt the baby has razor sharp claws and holds a grudge like Molly T. Cat.

We did make some more progress on the baby room this week. Grandma-to-be Cathy in Minnesota talked with Erin this week and they ordered the crib and stuff. We picked it up yesterday and besides weighing a million pounds, there are just as many pieces. My thinking was “hey we have 20+ weeks to put this stuff together“… Well needless to say Erin had different plans and I spent a good part of this afternoon making a giant pile of wood into a dresser. Once I can feel my fingers again I will be finishing it up, so I should have some pictures for next week.

Here is what the baby site has to say for week #18~

Baby’s Growth and Development at 18 Weeks Pregnant

At 18 weeks pregnant, growing is your baby’s number-one priority. Take a look at some of the developmental changes:

  • This week, your baby is about 5 1/2 inches long, or about the length of a large tomato.
  • Your baby’s skeleton continues to harden during the 18th week of your pregnancy. His leg bones and inner ear bones are the first to ossify (harden).
  • Your baby now can hear! He might hear your heart beat or your tummy gurgle.
  • He might hear loud sounds outside the womb.

5 1/2 inches or the size of a large tomato is pretty sweet. Since the last time we had the ultrasound it was only the length of an olive and that ultrasound looked awesome, I can’t wait to see what it looks like now!

*Update* Since it has only been six hours since this post went up, I thought it would be OK to add a little something. I said before we had a choice between putting the crib and dresser together over the next few weeks (my idea) and as soon as humanly possible (Erin’s idea). As you can see by the pictures we have decided to meet half way at around 18 hours after picking it up. Does look nice though!

Goodtimer Family Christmas 2009

Tonight was the annual Goodtimer Family Christmas party and Erin and I were able to attend with the rest of the family. There was good drinks, yummy food, and great company. Santa even stopped by for a little bit to hand out some presents (with the help of his elf). As usual I took a bunch of pictures (mostly of the kids) and you can find them in the Goodtimer Christmas 2009 album on the Greatlandings photo site. While your there feel free to check out the 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008 Goodtimer Family Christmas Party pictures as well.

Baby Watch – Week #17

baby-development-17-weeks-pregnantHi y’all, and welcome back to Baby Watch. We are at week 17 now and I have to say I wish we were at week #39 or so. Not because I am not loving every minute of this baby stuff, or doing these updates, but because everyday I get more and more excited and I just don’t think I can wait another 23 weeks!

Erin and I had another baby doctor appointment this week and they said everything is going perfect. The highlight was that we got to hear the heartbeat again. Like last time it was super fast, about 150 bpm according to the doctor but it was also much stronger and louder then last time. I guess I should not be all that surprised, we have gone from the size of a plum to the size of a large orange! We also got to schedule the next ultrasound in a few weeks, so we should have a few more pics to share then!

Other then that Erin is doing fine. She got her H1N1 shot this week, and unlike the last flu shot this one did not make her sick.

Here is what the baby site has to say for week #17 ~

Baby’s Growth and Development at 17 Weeks Pregnant

Between the 17th week of pregnancy and the 20th week, your baby experiences growth changes.

  • Right now, your baby is about 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches long, or about the length of a large orange.
  • Little hiccups continue and you might feel them!
  • When you’re around 17 weeks pregnant, a necessary fat called brown fat develops under your baby’s skin. This will help keep her warm after birth. Later in your pregnancy, additional layers of fat develop.
  • Air passages in your baby’s lungs finish branching.
  • By your 17th week of pregnancy, your baby’s lungs prepare to take in oxygen.

orangeSee I told you it was the size of a large orange.! I am not sure if they are hiccups or what, but Erin swears she can feel the baby every once in a while. She said it feels like when your swimming and someone pushes water at you underwater. I tried to listen but didn’t her anything but gurgles, so for now I’m calling this “unconfirmed“. See ya next week!
