Baby Watch – Week #23
Jan 13th 2010AdamBaby Updates
Hello everyone and welcome back to Baby Watch for week #23. This week is very special and falls into the “Super Duper Awesome Milestone” category. Why you ask? Because on Saturday morning I got to feel the baby move for the first time! That’s right, I felt the baby move! On Saturday morning Erin woke me up and told me that the baby was moving a lot. Having heard this a ton lately, I just nodded and said that was great. She then put my hand on her belly and told me to try and see if I could feel it. Again having done this a ton lately, I played along putting my hand on her belly all the while still half asleep and half thinking if we could made it to IHOP for breakfast before the Church crowd showed up. Then BANG! I felt it! Just a tiny little poke on my hand, followed by another, and another! It was all over in a matter of 15 seconds, but it was probably one of the best 15 seconds of my entire life!
Other then that little bit of fantastic news everything is progressing nicely. Erin is doing good and her belly is managing to get bigger and bigger every day. Erin also spent some more time in the babies room this past week. Putting up some cool little stickers on the wall of a tree and some animals. We are still on the lookout for an affordable rocking chair and small table to complete the room. But other then that it is pretty much baby ready! Just like me!
Here is what we have on the baby site for week #23~
Baby’s Growth and Development at 23 Weeks Pregnant
Much of your baby’s development during the 23rd week of pregnancy focuses on preparing for her first real breath once she is born. Here’s what’s happening this week:
- Your baby weighs slightly more than a pound now, and she’s about the length of an ear of corn.
- Your baby’s lungs develop rapidly this week as they prepare for birth.
- Her lungs are producing a substance called surfactant that allows the lungs to inflate and deflate without collapsing or sticking together.
- Blood vessels in your baby’s lungs also are growing and developing in preparation for breathing.
- Your baby is making breathing-like movements for practice, moving amniotic fluid in and out of her lungs.
- Although your baby is getting all of the oxygen she needs from your placenta, this practice is important for developing her diaphragm muscles.
- By your 23rd week of pregnancy, your baby actually looks like a baby. She still has little body fat and still is trying to fill out her wrinkly skin.
I for one am very happy to see corn as our size this week. Unlike summer squash or last weeks Head of Cabbage, I actually know what size an Ear of Corn is, and it is pretty freaking big! Roll on week #24!
